We recently finished a complete master bathroom remodel with a complete custom shower, soaking tub surround and 12 x 12 inch marble tile in Fort Collins, Colorado.
The existing bathroom consisted of carpet (who ever thought THAT was a good idea?!?!?), a tub surround with a huge, ugly step up to it, and an acrylic shower base (which never stay white) and 6 x 9 inch basic wall tile.
We began by removing all the outdated wall tile (as well as the walls with it), the carpet, acrylic shower base and that huge, ugly step in front of the tub.
We then reinforced the floor with an additional layer of plywood and Schluter Ditra tile underlayment membrane. After removing the acrylic shower base and walls we extended the half-wall by about nine inches to create more room inside the shower and fabricated a custom shower deck. The shower was then waterproofed with Schluter kerdi waterproof membrane (that’s the orange stuff in the photo).
We installed a nice 2×2 mosaic tile on the shower floor which accented the main wall and floor tile nicely. On the bathroom floor and shower walls we installed a 12 x 12 marble tile. The shower also received a radius corner shelf and a custom built-in shaving niche. Shaving niches give you the perfect place to prop up your leg while shaving – one of my customers’ favorite add-ons.
After losing the hideous step (have I mentioned that thing was ugly?) in front of the tub the marble was installed up and around the tub deck and accented with a small listello containing various colors and shades of marble. The listello was also continued up over the vanity top beneath the mirror to tie the entire look together.
We finished off the bathroom with matching marble tile base which we cut out of the main tile and rounded over to create a bullnose. Custom tile and stone base is another of my customers’ favorite options. It completes the installation and ties everything together rather than simply nailing up some more wooden base which doesn’t match anything else it touches. It simply looks better.
